What happens after I contact Titoma?
Once we receive details of your project, we will assess its business and technical feasibility and either clarify further via email or make arrangements for a conference call.
How to I protect my IP at this stage?
As a rule, we keep all information related to your project confidential. For you peace of mind however, we are more than willing to sign an NDA. You may download our NDA here.
Do I need to have full specifications to start?
Naturally for every project, the more information we have, the better position we are to assess the feasibility of your project as well as to estimate development and production costs and timelines. If you do not have specifications, we can help define this with a feasibility study or do so during the systems engineering phase. One of our project managers can work with you to define the project scope and build high- and low-level specifications for our engineering team.
Working with Titoma
What is Titoma culture?
Titoma is comprised of an agile, performance-oriented team of multi-disciplinary, hybrid professionals who are constantly honing our skills in executing complex electronic development projects and delivering results.
What’s it like to work with Titoma?
We are technical but pragmatic when it comes to delivering solutions that make sense from a manufacturing perspective. We are tireless, dedicated, and professional. In short, you will be hard pressed to find a team as passionate and focused as we are on making your product a market success.
How many people will be working on my project?
It will vary depending on the complexity of the device. But in general, you will have a project manager assigned to your project, chief engineer, a hardware engineer, a firmware engineer, mechanical engineer, and a sourcing specialist.
Who will be managing my project? What is their background?
A project manager will be coordinating your project throughout the various stages of development and manufacturing. Our project managers are all engineers themselves and are experienced with all facets of product development.
What methods do we use to communicate; in which language do we communicate; should I visit Titoma?
Our staff is multicultural and hail from different parts of the world. We do however prefer to keep communications in English as it is the common medium we use internally. We use email, telephone, or video conferencing to more clearly define projects and to discuss progress and issues.
What sets us apart from the other product development firms?
Titoma is indeed unique as a company. We take on your complete development from inception to production and everything in between. We execute projects with the mindset of doing whatever it takes to provide solutions that work from both a technical and financial perspective; all the while working closely with you and communicating effectively. We possess the strategic, creative and technical abilities necessary to deliver solutions that you require to bring to market a successful product.

What is your project management approach?
Titoma’s approach to project management is one which engages from a very early stage the different disciplines required to successfully design, engineer, and industrialize a product. We employ an approach which takes into account the agile and often iterative nature of product development. We take pride in our interactive, client-centered approach that involves you in all phases of a project. Our ability to produce functional and cost effective designs ensures that the end result will live up to your needs and expectations.
Does Titoma do everything?
Titoma undertakes all design and engineering work inhouse; for others we employ the services of companies in our trusted partner network in Taiwan, China, Russia, and South Africa.
When should I start contacting Titoma?
In general, companies that contact Titoma have already done market research, patent searches, as well as done research on competitive products and target costs. Having this information will help speed up the qualifying process we do to assess the feasibility of your project. In addition, clearly defining the device you want us to develop will help speed up the process and prevent “design creep” and delays.
Can I just order prototypes?
We prefer not to get involved in projects that only require development of prototypes. We create prototypes as a part of our development process, and our clients have a strong commitment to go forward with manufacturing, as the investment necessary for development of a product is too significant if the goal is only to produce prototypes.
What certifications do I need?
It depends on what kind of product we are developing on your behalf. Outside of electronics used in the medical, automotive, or avionics industries, CE, ROHS, and FCC are likely to be required.
What software do you use for electronic design?
For hardware development we use Altium Designer, Orcad and Pads Layout. For firmware development we use MPLAB.
Where will my products be manufactured?
We manufacture in Taiwan and China. What best determines this is the complexity of the product as we’ll as where the major electronic components will be purchased from.
How do you ensure quality is met?
Quality is compliance to specifications, testing criteria, and product validation. Quality checks are conducted when components procured are received at the factory, during production, after production, and before the products are sent out.
How do you protect my IP during this stage?
We do not engage the services of a single vendor during SMT board assembly, plastic enclosure injection, and final assembly. This way, none of the vendors are likely to know what the device is for.
Do you have an MOQ (minimum order quantity)?
Is best to speak of production value as opposed to MOQ. In general, having a production value of $150K makes it more likely to get factories interested in your project as well as a way to get competitive pricing.
Who owns the plastic injection molds (tools)?
Should I manufacture in China?
It depends. While China is inexpensive, it isn’t going to be faster to produce products here unless you are manufacturing at a grand scale. And to get the cost savings, your production value will have to be significant enough to get a factory interested in your project. Otherwise, if you want to produce in very small quantities and get fast turnaround, it’s best to do it in the West and then switch to China once your volume ramps up.
What products have you worked on before?
Titoma works on a varied lot consumer and industrial electronics projects. As a reference, an abbreviated list of projects would include:
- Biometric vein recognition scanner
- Surface scanner for pharmaceutical use
- Digital signage
- Environment controller
- Tele-medicine device
- Multimedia player for airplanes
- Exercise equipment
- Intraoral dental camera
- Bluetooth automotive devices
- Industrial UV curing
- Dive planner
- Medical keyboards
- Multi-media player for airplanes
What if you’ve not worked on a similar device before?
Then quite simply there would have to be a certain amount of learning to be done. Many of the projects we take on are new to the planet so either way a fair amount of research will be needed. Naturally, going to a factory in China already making similar devices would be faster; however, many of our clients are concerned over IP violations and inadvertently fueling their competition.
What industries have you worked with?
We’ve worked on projects for the health and medical, consumer, industrial, avionics, and automotive industries.
What kind of companies come to Titoma?
Companies that want to outsource their complete product development and manufacturing needs for the simple reason that they either do not have the internal bandwidth for development, or the technical expertise to do so. Other reasons include concern over IP protection and taking advantage of lower development fees, which could easily cost a third less than what it would in the West. These companies are often established companies with existing product lines and proven distribution channels, while others are well-funded startups.
How much will it cost to do my project?
It depends on the complexity of the device you want us to develop. As general idea, development fees could costs as low as $80K or as high as $400K for a highly complex device with stringent certification requirements.
How will the cost be broken down?
In some cases, development may be broken in stages and paid for accordingly; however, since we employ a more integrated approach in design, at times the stages are not divisible.
When would I get a unit cost?
During the preliminary quotation stages, an estimated unit cost will be provided. Bear in mind, however, that an accurate unit cost cannot be determined without doing the design of electronics first.
Does Titoma provide funding?
No, Titoma offers design, development, and manufacturing services. We do not have control over how a product will be marketed and therefore do not invest in projects.
How long will the development be?
It depends on the complexity of the product. A relatively simple electronic device may take 4-5 months to develop; while more complex projects may take in excess of a year. Bear in mind variables over which we do not have control, such as length of certification process, lead times of some components, or your own internal testing procedures to validate whether the device is compliant to your specifications.
